A grand statement French ormolu mantle clock with severs panels and columns by the top makers Howell & James Paris Antique c1860modelled in fire gilded bronze (bronze doré). In the base are a pair of exquisitely painted porcelain panels also featuring heraldic suites of armour. The clock was retailed by the famousHowell James and Companyof Regent Street London. The firmHowell and Jameswas founded in 1819 by James Howell and Isaac James who were originally silk mercers and retail jewellers. The company had premises at 5, 7 and 9 Regent Street and was noted for the variety and quality of its stock. In 1838 James left the business and the partnership then became known asHowell James & Co. The gilding is in lovely original condition with a colour and finish that can only be achieved with mercury gilding. The bronze work is heavy but beautifully light in design with a fine crispness.Comes with pendulum and original key and is in working order striking the hours on a bell .The top finial is missing but could be replaced if required. The front domed glass has a few scratches that could be polished out easily. A fine and rare quality mantel clock to add that touch of class to any room.
